There is currently an open deadline for applications but we expect any probationary tenancy will commence no later than the end of October 2025. Applications will be reviewed as soon as received on a rolling basis and we aim to revert to applicants with details of an interview within 7 days of receipt of any application.

- a detailed CV which sets out the nature of the work and practice you have carried out and observed during your first and second pupillages,
- a selection of anonymised pleadings, skeleton arguments and opinions produced during pupillage,
- confirmation of your pupil supervisors during the past 9 to 6 months, and
- a covering letter to our Senior Clerk, Justin Brown.

Probationary tenancy is an opportunity for further training and (for the right candidate) to begin to build a practice that will bring not only the desired financial reward but repeat instructions at an ever growing level of weight, complexity and diversity.
The successful candidate will produce draft pleadings, advices and skeleton arguments in his or her pupil supervisor’s cases, attend court and conferences with solicitors and lay clients, and receive regular feedback.
Unusually for sets in our areas of expertise, probationary tenancy provides a real opportunity for the right candidate (after an initial assessment period) to begin building a practice by appearing in Court on their own and in led work, and undertaking their own paperwork. He or she can expect to appear regularly in Court.
We continually assess the progress of probationary tenants, and provide feedback and mentoring.
We only offer probationary tenancy to those we believe have the potential to become a member of Chambers. That decision is usually made around the end of the third sixth month of probationary tenancy.
In the 12 months following completion of probationary tenancy, our successful candidates have, in recent years, earned between £150,000 and £200,000.
About Three Stone
Three Stone is a leading commercial chancery set situated in Lincoln’s Inn with 37 members including 6 silks. We specialise in all areas of traditional and commercial chancery work, and many have mixed practices spanning all these areas. In addition we have groups of members who specialise in insolvency, and in intellectual property law. We have a dedicated group of mediators.
Members frequently appear as Leading Juniors, or are led by KCs or by Senior Counsel. Our work has a strong international flavour with members appearing regularly in hearings (both in Court and in arbitrations) in such diverse jurisdictions as Hong Kong, British Virgin Isles, Cayman Islands, Singapore, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. In addition members area often briefed in matters in the Supreme Court and Privy Council as well as all other Civil Courts in England and Wales.
Probationary Tenants have the opportunity to assist with and observe these high profile matters and are actively encouraged to do so.
